Because I’m a personal trainer, have always enjoyed being active and managed to control my weight for most of my life, people are often shocked to learn how much I struggled with food and how much weight I gained at different times in my life. Then I started to believe the lie that it wasn’t important to take care of my health or take any time for me. I spent most of my time and energy taking care of my family and others, and took almost no time to recharge. This meant I didn't have the reserves built up when life hit with a number of stressful events. By the time I realized how worn down I was, it was too late. It took over 5 years before I could start to get out of the depression I was in, the days filled with pain, and lose the weight I’d gained during that dark time. 

I lost years that I can never get back because I started to believe that it wasn’t important or necessary to take care of myself. That it might even be selfish.

I was already embarrassed with the 40 pounds I had gained, but the thought of going to a military grad where my son and others had just gone through tough discipline and physical training in order to serve my country, really made me feel ashamed and take a hard look at myself. I felt bad thinking that my son might be embarrassed to introduce me to his instructors and friends because of my extra weight. I pictured them thinking "How did this guy end up being the top graduate when his mom looks like that???" I don't think this was the case, however this event was one of many that challenged me to make some changes.

We often think a healthy lifestyle takes too much time, is too inconvenient and costs too much money, but I can tell you it cost me a lot more when I stopped taking care of myself. I've never added up my medical costs. And I will never be able to count the cost of time lost with family and friends, missed opportunities, and the long-term damage I did to my body. But I did get better. Yay! And it wasn't with quick fixes, crazy diets or expensive supplements- miracle or otherwise.

When I was sick, depressed and exhausted I was just trying to get through a normal day and not break down in tears or end up in pain in bed. Why am I in the fitness and weight loss industry then? For a number of reasons.

Three big ones:

  1. I want women to learn to enjoy exercise for its many benefits that have little to do with weight loss.

GROUP MEETINGS

Although not required, in person group meetings offer a fun, fabulous opportunity for extra support and coaching to help you reach your goals. What will we do there? Every week will be a little different. You will receive your new weekly challenge and fitness and nutrition tips, there could be a short 15-20 workout, a Q&A time, weigh-ins (optional) etc.

FAQs

Q: Do you mail me the materials?

A: No - that is what is so great about the BEYOND BASICS 28 DAY CHALLENGE. You can start RIGHT ON THE START DATE. All the info will be emailed to you or available in the BEYOND BASICS APP or Member site.

Q: Does this program have an online support group?

A: Yes, it does.

Q: Do I have to attend the weekly group meetings?

A: You don't have to but you won't want to miss them 🙂 You can take this challenge long distance also and you will still get great support!

Q: What did you say? I can do this challenge if I don't live in La Crete?

A: Yes, you sure can. The Bronze and Gold packages are both great options for long distance challengers. I might even do the Strong by Zumba class as a live online class 🙂 I hope to offer one or two online LIVE question and answer times for anyone who would like to join in.

Q: Do I need a gym membership? What are the workouts like?

A: No, you don't. If you choose the Beyond Basics workout option you will get a choice of at home or gym workouts, however I do recommend that you have heavy weights at home or get a gym membership so you will have access to heavier weights and all equipment. If you buy the Gold or Platinum Package, you can also buy a one month gym membership for $20. A regular Beyond Basics Gym Membership is also a great deal.

Q: What kind of workouts will I be doing?

A: Your workouts will be a combination total body strength training, body resistance training, cardio and in class HIIT sessions for all levels so we keep your metabolism up and your body guessing each week.

Q: I don't lift weights and am scared of getting bulky - will this happen?

A: No! Not with my workouts. Unless you want to. There are different ways to strength train and my workouts are created for toning and strength, not bulk. Strength training does not make women "bulky" due to our lower levels of testosterone (All those women with huge muscles have been training in a specific way for YEARS) BUT it will help turn your body into a fat burning machine (Aka boost metabolism), give your awesome shape, get tight and toned, make you feel strong and sexy in addition to all the health benefits for resistance training for women. Once you get on the strength training train, you won't look back.

Q. How long are the workouts? How do I access them each week?

A: In class workouts are 50-60 minutes each. The ones you do at home are anywhere from 25-60 minutes depending on the program you choose and will be available in print or in the Beyond Basics app. You can take the workout with you and follow the demos that go with each exercise.

Q: What if something comes up or I have an extra busy week?

A: You will have some short options available for your busiest days! Yay! They are 25 minutes or less so you can easily fit them into to your schedule no matter what.

Q: Do I have to follow a lot of rigid food rules? What is the meal plan and recipes like? Is it a personalized meal plan?

A: No you don't! I do not believe in one diet for all women or in following a bunch of rules and restrictions. You will learn to eat at your nutrition level and challenge yourself from your starting point. There is not a personalized meal plan option in this challenge but depending on the package you purchase, you will be given an outline of how to plan your meals and a list of food substitutions to suit your tastes, needs and budget. When you sign up for the program, you might receive a form asking you for some information so I can best support you through this challenge. This will also help me when I choose recipes and write sample meal plans for future challenges and training programs.

Q: I have food allergies and intolerances, will I be able to do this challenge?

A: You can choose your own diet in this challenge so you can eat whatever you want. Or don't want 🙂 My recipes aren't necessarily allergy or gluten-free but I do have a food substitution guide to help you swap out for other foods should you require.

Q: Do I have to count calories or macronutrients?

A: Not unless you want to. Our main focus will be on eating whole, nutritious food and portion control. You can choose to count macros or calories, (MyFitnessPal is a great option and you can friend me on there.) but no counting or tracking is required. The portion control and  “build your own” templates are already calculated for the average women and explanations will be given if you need to tweak them for your needs.

Q: Do I need to take supplements during this program?

A: No - while I might give recommendations for supplements, they are not required.

Q: Will I be pressured to buy any supplements, health or other products or services during this challenge?

A: No, you are not entering one of those challenges where you will be sold to as soon as you sign up or come to a meeting. This is the main reason I offer different challenge packages. I want you to choose the tools and support you need BEFORE the challenge starts so that you are set up for success right from the start. (If you realize you need something more, of course talk to me and we will figure something out.

Q: Are there any men in this program?

A: No this is a women's only program.

Q: How do I know these workouts and nutrition info are created by a certified trainer?

A: All workouts and nutrition plans have been created by Fitness Professional and Certified Health Coach Edie Neudorf. She has also group instructor certified, and has taken extra courses geared specifically for women, prenatal & postpartum coaching and training, training the obese population and seniors, as well as courses in corrective exercise for injuries and injury prevention. The workouts are tried and tested plus they are created to be fun but always challenging to all levels of fitness so you aren’t limited to who can participate.

Note: This is a group challenge and the nutrition plans and workouts are not specifically designed for pregnant or new moms, diabetics or women with any other disease, disorder or injury. I strive to make my workouts as safe as possible for everyone but it's impossible to design general workouts to suit every person. I will help you where I can as time allows, but please talk to your doctor and/or nutritionist if you are pregnant, diabetic, have a heart condition or injury.
